Newtown Action Alliance Celebrates Election Victories and Calls for Urgent Action to Keep Our Children and Families Safe
Newtown, CT. —The following statement is being released by Po Murray, Chairwoman of Newtown Action Alliance after a historic midterm election for the gun control movement.
“We are thrilled to celebrate last night’s election victories and the election of gun violence prevention majorities in both the U.S. House and Senate. The majority of congressional candidates endorsed by Newtown Action Alliance won last night. We are incredibly grateful to the survivors, families, advocates, volunteers, and voters who worked so hard to make these victories possible. After two years of frustration and setbacks under the Trump administration, we have real reasons to celebrate and renewed hope that meaningful change is within reach.
Nearly 14 years ago, a 20-year-old gunman with an AR15 hunted and murdered 20 children and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School. We promised families and communities across the nation that we would do everything in our power to prevent another tragedy. Yet another generation of children is growing up practicing active shooter drills, afraid of getting shot in their classrooms or in the streets, while parents worry whether their children will make it home safely.
These historic election victories give us an extraordinary opportunity to turn years of grassroots advocacy into meaningful progress. We look forward to working with the new House and Senate majorities to urgently prioritize passing a federal assault weapons ban, Ethan’s Law to #KeepKidsSafe from unsecured guns, universal background checks, eliminating gun industry’s civil liability shield, funding community violence intervention programs, and other lifesaving gun laws. We also expect the new Congress to reverse gun control protections that have been weakened by the Trump administration, his allies in Congress and the Supreme Court, and the gun industry.
For nearly 14 years, survivors and families have repeatedly shared their deeply painful stories, met with lawmakers, organized vigils and rallies, and worked tirelessly to elect leaders who understand the urgency of this crisis. We are encouraged that so many candidates who committed to protecting our children and families have earned the trust of voters and we look forward to helping them fulfill those commitments.
Today, we celebrate everyone who helped make these victories possible and welcome the opportunity to work with our newly elected leaders. Winning elections was a crucial step for the gun control movement. Now, the 120th Congress must deliver by advancing and passing popular and sensible gun laws that will save lives and give our children and loved ones the safer future they deserve. Congress must not wait for another Sandy Hook, Parkland, or Uvalde to act.”
