2022 SENATE ENDORSEMENTS

Newtown Action Alliance (NAA) is proud to endorse Senate incumbents and candidates who support the assault weapons ban legislation for the 2022 Midterm Elections.

For 10 years after a 20-year-old gunman with an AR-15 and high-capacity magazines killed 20 children and six educators in Sandy Hook Elementary School, NAA has been advocating for a set of bold and comprehensive gun control legislation - including assault weapons ban - to dramatically reduce all forms of gun violence in our nation.

In 2019, NAA joined a coalition of gun violence prevention survivors, advocates and researchers from across the country at the GVPedia Conference in Denver, Colorado, to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Columbine shooting, and to forge a path forward to a safer America. From this assembly the Denver Accordwas born, a declaration of guiding principles and policies to end the scourge of gun violence in America.

NAA has fully endorsed GVPedia’s Denver Accord principles that acknowledge 1) Guns do not make us safer; 2) Gun violence in America is a pervasive public health crisis that demands substantial policy solutions and well-funded programs that effectively reduce gun violence; 3) Equitable and just enforcement of gun laws is paramount; and 4) Everyone has the right to live free from violence.

NAA will continue to urge all members of Congress to fully support the Denver Accord. Meanwhile, NAA is endorsing Senate incumbents and candidates who support legislation to ban assault weapons in order to keep weapons of war away from school and mass shooters, keeping our children, loved ones, and communities safe.

The House of Representatives passed the assault weapons ban legislation on Jul 29, 2022, and President Joe Biden has repeatedly signaled that he would sign the bill into law and told a crowd in August that "If we elect two more [Democratic] senators, we got a lot of unfinished business we're gonna get done. Folks, look, we're gonna codify Roe v Wade. We'll ban assault weapons…”

Only 12 Senate Democrats and 50 Senate Republicans are blocking the assault weapons ban legislation. A recent Navigator Research showed that 89% of Americans fear school shootings.

Since Sandy Hook, there have been nearly 4,000 mass shootings and over 350,000 Americans have been killed by guns. The following Senate candidates have honored all victims of gun violence with action and commitment to end the gun violence public health crisis in our nation.

“Charles has lost six family members to gun violence in the past six years, and knows intimately the impact gun violence can have on the family members and communities that experience it. He joins Americans across the country in carrying the trauma of having loved ones murdered. Gun violence is a public health crisis, and must be addressed as one.

Like the vast majority of Americans, Charles supports common sense gun safety measures that will keep all families safe. As a Senator, Charles will support universal background checks for all gun purchases and enforcement of wait times to allow for full background checks. He will advocate for closing of the Charleston loophole, ensure that weapons of war are not used to devastate neighborhoods, and will support full funding the Centers for Disease Control to allow for research into the public health threat that is gun violence.” https://charlesbooker.org/issues/end-the-public-health-crisis-of-gun-violence/

“Gary would support bans of the sale of military-grade weapons.

The only purpose of a military-grade assault weapon is to harm other humans. You cannot use an assault weapon for hunting. According to Everytown research: “In the 12 years from 2009 to 2020, there were at least 30 mass shootings (16 percent of those with known weapon data) that involved the use of an assault weapon, resulting in 347 deaths and 719 injuries. In other words, mass shootings that involved an assault weapon accounted for 25 percent of all mass shootings deaths and 76 percent of injuries.” We need to get these weapons out of the hands of those who would perpetrate these crimes. Both the shooter in Buffalo and the shooter in Uvalde used assault weapons.” https://chambersforlouisiana.com/issues/common-sense-gun-reform/

“Cheri also believes that we must keep our children and communities safe by also implementing common sense gun safety measures like universal background checks, encouraging safe storage and closing loopholes to prevent domestic abusers and those with mental health issues from being able to obtain a gun. We must also do more to stop the plague of mass shootings across our communities by keeping combat-style weapons and high-capacity magazines off our streets and away from our schools.” https://cheribeasley.com/issue/keeping-north-carolina-communities-safe/

“Democratic U.S. Senate candidate John Fetterman called for a ban on “military-grade assault weapons” following a July 4 holiday with more gun-related carnage across the country.

“There is a sad irony about our country experiencing multiple mass shootings on a day that is meant to celebrate its greatness and our freedom,” Fetterman, Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor, said in a statement released by his campaign.” https://www.pennlive.com/news/2022/07/fetterman-calls-for-ban-on-military-grade-assault-weapons-after-chicago-area-parade-massacre.html

“The lieutenant governor would prioritize policies including background checks on all gun sales, ERPO/red-flag laws and closing loopholes that allow domestic abusers to have guns, his campaign said.

Other proposals Barnes would support include bans on "ghost guns," bans on assault weapons, bans on high-capacity magazines and repealing the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which protects firearms manufacturers and dealers from liability when their products are used to commit crimes.” https://captimes.com/news/government/what-wisconsins-2022-candidates-say-they-will-do-to-prevent-gun-violence/article_48e3f65e-bcdd-50c0-b7d0-e0012bcab95d.html
