Newtown Action Alliance and Ceasefire Oregon Endorse Earl Blumenauer for Oregon’s 3rd Congressional District

Newtown, CT - The Newtown Action Alliance is proud to join Ceasefire Oregon in endorsing Earl Blumenauer for Oregon’s 3rd Congressional District.

Mr. Blumenauer was first elected to represent Oregon’s 3rd Congressional District in the U. S. House of Representatives in a special election in 1996. He won the regular election in November of that year and has since been re-elected to 10 more consecutive terms to represent his district. He is currently a member of the Committee on Ways and Means in the House.

Mr. Blumenauer has long been a strong advocate for reducing gun violence in our country. In 2014 he authored a publication titled Enough is Enough, A Comprehensive Plan to Improve Gun Safety, which outlines a set of constructive steps to be taken to reduce gun violence. He also supports the Denver Accord, a declaration of guiding principles and a comprehensive set of policies to end the scourge of gun violence in America.

On February 28, 2019, he voted for H.R.8, Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, and H.R. 1112, Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019 in the House of Representatives. These bills are currently being blocked by the Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Republican Senators.

Recently, he has co-sponsored 1) H.R. 1236, Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2019; 2) H.R. 2708 Disarm Hate Act; 3) H.R.3214, Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act; and 4) H.R. 1296, Assault Weapons Ban of 2019.

Representative Blumenauer also regularly authors E-Newsletters urging Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and President Donald Trump to act on important legislation that would reduce gun violence in America. He has received a grade of F from the National Rifle Association during the last five election campaigns.

Po Murray, Chairperson of Newtown Action Alliance, said: “We are proud to endorse Representative Blumenauer. He fully understands that there is no single solution that will reduce the gun violence epidemic that threatens rural and urban communities in Oregon and beyond. We look forward to working with him to pass a set of comprehensive gun safety policies that will protect all Americans from all forms of gun violence.”

Penny Okamoto, Executive Director of Ceasefire Oregon, said: “Congressman Blumenauer fights for strong, effective laws that will reduce gun violence and fiercely takes on the gun lobby. His thoughtful approach, outlined in his publication Enough is Enough, includes comprehensive background checks for all gun sales and restricting assault weapons as well as high-capacity magazines that can hold dozens of bullets. Congressman Blumenauer is committed to this fight that will protect our kids, families, and communities.”
