Newtown Action Alliance Endorses Pramila Jayapal for
Washington’s 7th Congressional District
Newtown, CT - The Newtown Action Alliance is proud to endorse Pramila Jayapal for Washington’s 7th Congressional District.
Representative Jayapal was first elected to represent Washington’s 7th District in the United States House of Representatives in November 2016. She was re-elected to that office in 2018, receiving over 80% of the vote. She is currently a member of both the House Budget Committee and the House Judiciary Committee.
Since joining the House, Representative Jayapal has been a consistent advocate for gun safety. She voted for H.R.8, Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 and H.R. 1112, Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019. These bills, supported by over 90% of Americans, are currently being blocked by the Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Republican senators.
In 2019, she joined Representative Eliot Engel (D-NY) to introduce the Safe Storage bill (HR 4691), which would require firearm locks and safes to be more effective in minimizing access to guns by the wrong people, including children in a household. As a House Judiciary Committee member, she has championed 1) H.R. 1236, the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2019; 2) H.R. 1186, Keep Americans Safe Act to ban large capacity magazines; and 3) H.R. 2708, Disarm Hate Act. She is also a cosponsor of H.R. 1296, Assault Weapons Ban of 2019, H.R.3214, Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act.
Representative Jayapal has written open letters to House and Senate leaders urging action on gun safety bills enacted by the House and asking them to prioritize Gun Violence Prevention Research funding in the 2020 Federal budget. She supports the Denver Accord, a declaration of guiding principles and a comprehensive set of policies to end the scourge of gun violence in America.
