Newtown Action Alliance Endorses Alan Lowenthal for

California’s 47th Congressional District

Newtown, CT -- The Newtown Action Alliance is proud to endorse Alan Lowenthal for California’s 47th Congressional District.

Alan Lowenthal was elected to represent California’s 47th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012. He is now serving in his fourth consecutive term. Representative Lowenthal’s record on gun violence prevention is strong -- and long. He voted to support 1) H.R.8, Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019; 2) H.R. 1112, Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019; and 3) H.R.4909, the STOP School Violence Act of 2018. He also voted against the H.R.38 - Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017.

In 2019, Representative Lowenthal co-sponsored the H.R. 674, Gun Violence Research Act to allow the Center for Disease Control and the Department of Health and Human Services to conduct evidence-based research on causes and effects of gun violence.

Representative Lowenthal, a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Forceis among 128 lawmakers, almost all of them Democrats, who co-sponsored HR  1076, the Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2015. Co-authored by Rep. Peter King, R-New York, this is the proposed “no fly, no buy” legislation banning individuals on federal terror watch lists from purchasing firearms.

He also supports the Denver Accord, a declaration of guiding principles and a comprehensive set of policies to end the scourge of gun violence in America.

Representative Lowenthal has received a grade of F from the NRA in all four of his previous Congressional election campaigns. His passion for gun safety is evidenced in the following statement he published earlier this year: "We’re just over six weeks into 2020, and already too many communities, including my own, have experienced the tragedy of gun violence. We can’t keep pretending like everything is normal or that this problem will magically go away. We need action and meaningful change. Last year, I was proud to help pass in the House the first meaningful gun reform in decades, but it was only a step in the right direction and our fight to end gun violence is far from over. I’m ready to see gun safety reforms become law. We need to send a message, loud and clear that the power of our movement is stronger than the gun industry and their lobbyists."

Po Murray, Chairperson of Newtown Action Alliance said, “We are proud to endorse Representative Lowenthal for 2020 Elections. He has been a steadfast advocate for gun violence prevention. California has the strongest gun laws in the nation and he will champion similar federal measures to keep our families safe from all forms of gun violence in Sandy Hook, Los Angeles, Oakland, New York, Chicago, Milwaukee and beyond.”
